Antigua Street – Annandale Street northbound road closure

On 2 October 2022 there will be changes to the traffic management arrangements on the northbound section of Leith Walk between Antigua Street and Annandale Street to allow final surfacing works.

This will involve a full northbound road closure for approximately three weeks from the Picardy Place turnback to Annandale Street. The Picardy Place turnback will remain operational throughout the duration of these works.

Please note that during these works the project standard working hours will be extended on Saturdays and Sundays. Hours of work will be from 8am to 5pm.

There will be diversion signage installed in the local area to inform road users of the recommended route. The main diversion route for northbound cyclists will be Dublin Street,  Abercromby Place, Albany Street, Broughton Street and East London Street while traffic will be diverted via Dundas Street, Brandon Terrace, Canonmills, Broughton Road and Bonnington Road.

. Please note between Hanover Street and London Road, buses will be diverted via Dundas Street, Great King Street, Drummond Place, London Street, East London Street, Annandale Street and Elm Row and between Princes Street and Leith Walk, buses will be diverted via Waverley Steps, Leith Street, Broughton Street, East London Street and Annandale Street.

Please note that both junctions at Gayfield Square are closed with entry and exit to Gayfield Square via East London Street. In addition, Union Street is closed at its junction with Antigua Street/Leith Walk for approximately four weeks to accommodate project works in the area. Access will be maintained via Broughton Street, Broughton Place and Forth Street with the one way system on Union Street between Antigua Street/Leith Walk and Forth Street suspended to allow access. Loading provisions will remain in place for businesses.

Additionally, hard landscaping works are continuing between Annandale Street and progressing towards Union Street.

The creation of the new kerb lines has been ongoing within the established site. In order to complete works on the existing footway, we will be required to make changes to our site working arrangements which will see fence lines and works moving towards buildings between Gayfield Square and Union Street.

These changes are expected to take place from week commencing Monday 10 October with works to take approximately two weeks to complete.

Pedestrian diversions will be in place with access to shops, hospitality and leisure units always being maintained for members of the public, residents, and local shop owners.

On completion of these works, fence lines will be removed from the west side of the area. You can view the final designs here.

View the traffic management arrangements (PDF). Please note there will be no right-hand turn off London Road onto Leith Walk during these works.

In order to improve traffic management arrangements, vehicles will be able to turn left into Dalmeny Street from Leith Walk and left out of Dalmeny Street onto Leith Walk. In addition, Brunswick Road will become one-way for traffic heading east towards Easter Road.

A second phase of works on the southbound side of Leith Walk from Annandale Street to the Picardy Place turnback will take place once the above works are completed. Further details on this phase will be available shortly.
