Work with adults with learning disabilities
Shared Lives carers work with someone over the age of 16 who needs some help to live an ordinary life in the community.
As a Shared Lives carer, you offer support and accommodation for up to two people with learning disabilities. You help the person to live as independently as possible by
- helping them with their every day care and health needs
- supporting them to make choices and realise their potential.
Working as a Shared Lives carer is flexible so it can fit in with your life. It can be a long term arrangement, an overnight stay, a weekend break or a few weeks' holiday.
We need to assess if you are suitable. If your application is successful and we match you with someone looking for a Shared Lives carer, you would be self employed and paid a fee for the work you do. We offer you training and continuous support.

How we assess Shared Lives carers
You are asked to
- complete an application form
- talk to a Shared Lives worker to start the assessment process
- meet regularly with your worker so we can learn about your values, experience, abilities and knowledge.
We
- ask for references and carry out checks including medical checks, Disclosure Scotland's PVG check and local authority checks
- write a report describing what you can offer someone needing a placement and make recommendations to the placement panel.
It can take three or four months before the panel approve your application.
